Pros and Cons of Vaginal & C-Section Births
There are pros and cons to both vaginal and Caesarean Section births but in the end the only thing that matters is that a baby is being born!
Vaginal Birth
PROS:- Shorter hospital stay
- Shorter recovery
- Avoid major surgery and associated complications
- Breastfeed sooner
- Bond with baby sooner
- Fluid squeezed out of baby's lungs (less breathing complications)
- Immunity boost from good bacteria in birth canal
- Physically hard work for mama
- Potential tearing & stitches
- More likely to get bowel or urinary incontinence
- Perineal discomfort
- Risk of injury for large babies (fractured collarbone, bruising..)
- Potential use of forceps or vacuum
C-Section Birth
PROS:- Convenient to know baby's due date
- No contractions
- Necessary for high risk pregnancies or complicated labours (multiples, placenta previa, breech, cord prolapse, large baby...)
CONS:
- Major surgery & increased risk of complications (blood clots, infection)
- Longer recovery
- Can't breastfeed/bond immediately
- More likely to have c-section for subsequent births
- Potentially more fluid in lungs
Hope this helps you!
