Pros and Cons of Vaginal & C-Section Births

There are pros and cons to both vaginal and Caesarean Section births but in the end the only thing that matters is that a baby is being born!

Newborn

Vaginal Birth

 PROS:
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Shorter recovery
  • Avoid major surgery and associated complications
  • Breastfeed sooner
  • Bond with baby sooner
  • Fluid squeezed out of baby's lungs (less breathing complications)
  • Immunity boost from good bacteria in birth canal
CONS:
  • Physically hard work for mama
  • Potential tearing & stitches
  • More likely to get bowel or urinary incontinence
  • Perineal discomfort
  • Risk of injury for large babies (fractured collarbone, bruising..)
  • Potential use of forceps or vacuum 

C-Section Birth

PROS:
  • Convenient to know baby's due date
  • No contractions
  • Necessary for high risk pregnancies or complicated labours (multiples, placenta previa, breech, cord prolapse, large baby...)
 
CONS:
  • Major surgery & increased risk of complications (blood clots,infection)
  • Longer recovery
  • Can't breastfeed/bond immediately
  • More likely to have c-section for subsequent births
  • Potentially more fluid in lungs
